Sèvres - Babylone

Sèvres - Babylone
Paris 6e

It was under the reign of Queen Catherine de' Medici that the first signs of urbanisation appeared.

Architecture

The district harmoniously blends all of the architectural aspects of its past.

Wide avenues laid out by Baron Haussmann surround the Art Deco masterpiece that is Le Bon Marché, while the Catherine Labouré garden, a relic of the convent's vegetable garden, shelters just behind it, carving out a haven of medieval serenity where the long days of the congregations still run their course.

The Lutetia is a striking example of Art Deco, faithfully redesigned by Wilmotte, and the many religious buildings punctuate the district with medieval or Renaissance details. These include the former Récollettes convent and the Laennec hospital chapel, while the reflective Maison des Sciences de l'Homme building casts 21st century lights over Boulevard Raspail (No 54).

This harmonious blend of various time periods is the district's architectural signature, which offers the best of Paris's history, but always under the 'Archi-chic' theme.

Located on the elegant and lively "Rive Gauche", or Left Bank, a central and residential, elegant and authentic, family-friendly and trendy area, it has gained unwavering popularity as one of the most sought-after districts in Paris.

The district harmoniously blends all of the architectural aspects of its past.

Not to be missed

Le Bon Marché is still an endless realm of exploration. Its stained glass windows, mosaics and staircases are a sight to behold, but it has serious competition in the Lutetia, established in 1910 to cater for Le Bon Marché's wealthy clients.

Designed by the same architect as its illustrious neighbour, it has itself become a legendary hotel, at the crossroads between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. It has welcomed illustrious artists, painters and writers including Picasso, Matisse and André Gide.

We continue our exploration of Parisian heritage with a screening at La Pagode, the oldest arthouse cinema in the city, before finding some peace and quiet in the delightful walled garden of the Paris Foreign Missions Society.

Neighborhood Life

Le Bon Marché sets the pace for the district's elegant lifestyle. People stroll here, meet up here, have lunch or go to see a show here. A place to live like no other, a must-visit neighbourhood.

It has also infused the area with a spirit of refinement and authenticity, and the district's stores all share the same high standards, Aoyama Flower Market, a poetic florist; Des Gâteaux et du Pain, one of Paris' best bakeries, and the sweet treats of Philippe Conticini, a pastry chef with a reputation that stretches far beyond our borders, without forgetting the exceptional coffees at Coutume on Rue de Babylone.

The epicentre of Paris Elégant, families are the VIP residents here, sometimes living here over several generations.
