Architecture

Not to be missed

Set back from the passageways, the former chapel of the Couvent des Petits-Augustins, built in the early 17th century, is where Catherine de' Medici then Margaret of Valois began the first collections of art later to become the Beaux-Arts de Paris school of fine arts.

The pigment store Sennelier, created in 1887 by Gustave Sennelier and which can count among its clientèle Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro, Chaïm Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani, Vassily Kandinsky, Pierre Bonnard and even Pablo Picasso.

And as the sun sets, the extra distance to the musée du quai Branly is well worth the effort to see the light shimmer and fade across the roof of the Grand Palais.

Neighborhood Life

Facing the Seine, the district inspires reverie. Second-hand booksellers line the banks while the restaurants offer provisions to accompany this delight of the senses.

Le Voltaire, La Frégate and Cocorico all serve traditional cuisine, while L’Éclipse puts a more modern twist on the French classics and Paris Seine includes a view to go with your glass.

The now pedestrianised quays are filled with families, health enthusiasts, skaters, onlookers and tourists on a Sunday, all enjoying Paris at its best from under the clock of the Musée d’Orsay.
