Untouched by the upheavals of Haussmann's renovation of Paris

Louis IX, the future Saint Louis, liked to pray in solitude and according to legend his favourite place to do so was the Île aux Vaches (what is now the eastern portion of the island).

It was the king’s fondness for this stretch of pastures belonging to the canons of Paris that earned it the name Île Saint-Louis in honour of his daily pious visits.

 

It was Marie de' Medici who undertook the area’s modernisation in the 17th century, transforming the peaceful meadows into the city’s heart, filled with sophisticated architecture and elegant boutiques. Even Pont Marie bridge, named after her, was home to a variety of shops up until the 19th century.

 

The area’s architecture, composed of sumptuous private mansions, is still intact today, an unblemished example of Paris’ urban development in the 17th century.

Hôtel de Lauzun listed as a historic monument, where Baudelaire wrote “L’invitation au voyage”, is the ideal starting point for a stroll beginning on the Quai d’Anjou to admire the resplendent façades of the private mansions, unchanged since the 18th century.

Pause for a moment on Place Louis Aragon to take in the Seine before retracing your steps up Rue Saint-Louis-en-l’île which crosses the island from west to east and is the most bustling of its streets, encapsulating its village charm.

 

An array of fine food shops stand one alongside the other, including 38 Saint Louis cheese shop and L'Etiquette wine shop, flanked by excellent traditional restaurants (L’Orangerie, Sorza, Le Sergent Recruteur and Le Saint Régis) as well as more exotic ones (the superb Afghan Khana), and adorable little shops.
